2013 05-02 SB Coast : A lovely day on the water today. Bright sun, a light breeze, and very calm, flat sea conditions. Report from the 12 noon adventure finds one very nice mother-calf gray whale pair. The pair was found off Campus Point and was tracked to the west past Isla Vista to Coal Oil Point (better known as Counter Point). The track of the cetaceans was fairly regular and motivated, but towards the end of the experience, the mother popped her head out of the water and took a good look at the Condor. The nearshore kelp forests were looking spectacular in the bright sun. Approx 10 bottlenose dolphins were seen as we first left the harbor on this trip.

2013 04-28 SB Coast : The overcast conditions quickly gave way to partly sunny skies as the Condor left Sea Landing for its 12noon trip along the coast of beautiful Santa Barbara and in all, we closely watched eleven gray whales. There were 5 mother-calf pairs and a single. We followed them from east beach westward to Arroyo Burro. As has been happening lately, the youngsters spy hopped and tried to climb on mom’s back. Many groups formed and parted during the trip. Out of this world!

2013 04-20 SB Coast : Two trips today: Bright warm sun and a glassy ocean with small swells in the morning that pretty much died out to calm seas by the afternoon. A total of seven northbound gray whale were closely followed and numerous others were in the area. Our seven included 3 separate cow-calf pairs and one extremely friendly juvenile, perhaps a yearling or second year whale. This juvenile made several direct approaches to the Condor and ran parallel to our course only a dozen or so yards off our beam. It was a magical and special encounter. As for the smaller breeds of cetaceans, we had around 1,000 long beaked common dolphins that were spread out over a mile or so and actively feeding. Later, a herd of about 15 or so inshore bottlenose dolphins approached the boat a few times to the delight of all. At was truly a day full of epic adventures.

2012 03-24 SB Channel : On the morning trip we had great looks at Gray Whales Eschrichtius robustus up near UCSB. On the noon trip, more Gray Whales and a herd of Common Dolphins Delphinus capensis. It was a calm day and perfect for photographing the sheen on the ocean surface for some outrageous patterns.

2012 03-03 SB Channel : Two trips: On the 9am trip we observed two Gray Whales (Eschrichtius robustus) in mating-like behavior plus 3 more later. On the 12 noon trip we saw a Gray Whale near the beach and a nice pod of Dall's Porpoise (Phocoenoides dalli). It was a gorgeous day to be alive on the Channel. 2010 12-31 SB Channel : Five transient Killer Whales (Orcinus orca) on a sunny but cool day. The big male has been identified as CA28 and the Females: CA38, CA21, CA170 by Alisa Schulman-Janiger. Alisa also says that these transients are not commonly encountered.

2010 08-11 Far West SB Channel : Hordes of Blue Whales (Balaenoptera musculus) and Humpback Whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) were feeding today, 42 miles from the Harbor, at the far west end of the Santa Barbara Channel. What a thrill to see these beasts all congregated together feasting on krill. On the way we saw Common Dolphins (Delphinus capensis) attacking schools of Northern Anchovies (Engraulis mordax), and also saw Risso's Dolphins (Grampus griseus). Wow! 2010 07-31 SC Bight : Baird's Beaked Whales (Berardius bairdii; 34 10N, 120 38W) and Black-footed Albatross (Phoebastria nigripes) from the LA Audubon & the Condor Express' 15-hour deep water pelagic bird adventure. It was overcast and drizzly, with moderate winds and light chop on the water. 12 species of marine mammals and 26 species of marine birds (plus 2 terrestrial birds incidentally lost at sea) were observed. Only the Albatross and Baird's Beaked Whale photos are featured here.

2010 06-30 SB Channel : Lunge feeding extravaganza! Among the Humpback Whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) we observed off the northwest corner of Santa Rosa Island, was one individual that lunge-fed on surface Krill (Thysanoessa spinifera) continually for nearly an hour, and continued to feed even as we left and headed back to the Harbor. Albeit anthropomorphic, I nicknamed this whale "The Glutton." There were lots of other interesting species too on a mostly overcast and slightly windy day. I've photographed hundreds of lunge-feeding whales, but nothing ever before matched this day.

2010 06-29 SB Channel : A flat, calm, overcast and drizzly day which yielded tremendous wildlife! The Humpback Whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) did some lunge feeding, the Risso's Dolphins (Grampus griseus) came around and one breached, the Common Dolphins (Delphinus capensis) rode alongside the Condor Express, and the Pacific White-sided Dolphins (Lagenorhyncus obliquidens) were on the scene too. At one point, a juvenile California Sea Lion (Zalophus californianus) got extremely close to two Humbacks and there was some interaction between the species.

2010 06-28 SB Channel : A very calm, flat ocean today brought us two Blue Whales (Balaenoptera musculus), dozens of Humpback Whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) including some lunge-feeding, Common Dolphins (Delphinus capensis) and Risso's Dolphins (Grampus griseus). The Santa Cruz Island visit resulted in two Pinnipeds: California Sea Lions (Zalophus californianus) and Pacific Harbor Seals (Phoca vitulina richardsonii). What a day!

2010 06-05 SB Channel : A couple of friendly Humpback Whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) and tons of Common Dolphins (Delphinus capensis) in dense FOG. It was a special and peaceful experience, shrouded in fog so dense you could only see 50 feet at times. The surface was very glassy and the sounds of the animals seemed magnified.

2010 05-30 SB Channel : Northern Right Whale Dolphins (Lissodelphis borealis), Pacific Whitesided Dolphins (Lagenorhyncus obliquidens), and Humpback Whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) galore! A most memorable adventure on a sunny day with glassy seas. Wow! First we got seriously "mugged" by two groups of 3 Humpbacks, with a 4th beast joining in the fun on the 2nd encounter. No whaler was left uncoated with fragrant spout spray, and ears filled with the trumpet calls from these magnificent monsters. Then we moved south towards the "mother lode" of Humpbacks....yes, that's right, we had not even been in the thick of things yet. While observing at least 50 beasts all around, as far as the eye could see, Capt Dave Beezer spotted some activity about a mile northwest of our location. It was a mixed group of several Rissos Dolphins (Grampus griseus...not photographed here) along with several hundred very friendly Pacific Whitesided Dolphins, and mixed in with the group of 3 different Odonotocetes, the rarest of all....many friendly Northern Right Whale Dolphins. Suffice it to say that the memory cards and memory centers of the brain were both filled to capacity by the time we said goodbye and headed for the "island portion of the trip." This was one of THOSE kinds of days...great to be alive and breathing the fresh air of the Santa Barbara Channel.

2010 02-04 Zuma Beach : Gray Whale in the surf. Photos not taken aboard the Condor Express, but may be of interest. While conducting our regular Thursday beach research at Malibu High School, we observed this whale for over an hour and a half. It spyhopped, rolled around, swam, showed its tail flukes and otherwise appeared to be having fun in the surf zone. This occurred from approximately 930am to 11am, and I don't think this is the same whale that made the local news down around the Malibu Pier.

2009 12-20 SB Channel : The first southbound Gray Whales of our viewing season were tracked along the north side of Santa Cruz Island, between Potato Harbor and Scorpion Anchorage. A nice sized pod of Risso's Dolphins were observed in Chinese Harbor as well. A thin, grey overcast sky with light winds caused a silvery metalic surface for the shortest day of the year. A couple of looks at a Bald Eagle, and a cow-calf pair of Bottlenose Dolphins near the Harbor. Wow!

2009 08-20 SB Channel : An overcast day but a very flat ocean produced ideal conditions for krill to be up on the surface again. Many many Blue Whales, including a few lunge-feeding, were seen, and a couple of Humpbacks too. Great!

2009 08-12 SB Channel : Overcase skies did not deter the cetaceans. A young lunge-feeding Humpback Whale proved to be quite a glutton, and then we moved west to find lunge-feeding Blue Whales. After leaving Santa Cruz Island we came upon no less than three Minke Whales too. Add a dash of the always popular Common Dolphins and it was another day in paradise on the Santa Barbara Channel.

2009 08-01 SB Channel All Day ACS Trip : All-day lunge LUNGE-FEEDING Blue and Humpback krill banquet. The LA Chapter of the American Cetacean Society hosted the feast observation trip on the Condor Express. During the afternoon we hooked up with research scientist John Calambokidis, Megan McKenna and crew who were in the area tagging whales. This was one of the most impressive masses of both Blues and Humpbacks engaged in lunge feeding on the surface that I've ever seen.

2009 07-15 SB Channel : Sometimes the Santa Barbara Channel just boils over with life of all kinds, and today was one of those days. Humpbacks galore, Blue Whales, Common Dolphins everywhere you looked, sea lions everywhere, and masses of sea birds (primarily sooty shearwaters) covering the oily glass surface.

2009 07-14 SB Channel : Today the krill was not on the surface, but the cetaceans were still very plentiful. Dozens of Humpback Whales, several Blue Whales, a lone Minke, and a nice pod of Common Dolphins helped make the day. Volunteers from CIMWI (Channel Islands Marine and Wildlife Institute) also released 2 rehabilitated California Sea Lions back into the pinniped infested waters of Santa Cruz Island. Another great day on the Channel!

2009 07-13 SB Channel : Whalespeak: "We got mugged!!!" Captain Dave Beezer and his crew found a single adult female Humpback Whale in the separation zone between the mid-Channel big ship traffic lanes. This animal spent over an hour rubbing up against the Condor Express and spouting directly on the whalers only a few feet from the blowholes. Oh, and if that wasn't enough, Dave also found Blue Whales and lunge-feeding Humpbacks and a megapod of Common Dolphins. The acres of krill on the surface that we have seen for the past week or so continues and is growing out into the middle of the Channel.

2009 05-16 Condor Express All Day Bird Trip : The Condor Express ran an all-day bird trip for Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary volunteers and their guests. Despite overcast skies all day, the Condor ran up the Channel to a spot 20 miles west of San Miguel Island, then headed south for a few hours of deep water hunting. As you will see from these images, many good birds and mammals were observed. Another great day on the Condor Express.

You gotta get out here and witness this natural spectacle! By the way, all of the Blue Whale antics photographed on this day were of the same individual whale.

2009 05-25 Krill & Humpbacks Blues & Dolphins : It was an overcast, grey day in the Channel, with a light-to-moderate wind chop. The Humpbacks were 7 miles south of the Harbor, and the Blue Whale was off the West End of Santa Cruz Island. Lots of Common Dolphins too. On th way back we stopped and put a 0.5mm mesh plankton net over the side to capture a few krill. Fun fun fun.

2009 04-07 SB Channel Condor Express HUMPIE EXTRAVIGANZA! : Sunny in the morning, rainy in the afternoon, but what a day! It was Humpback Whale-o-rama! In the morning we got "mugged" by 2 humpies that circled the boat for an hour. In the afternoon, the same 2 whales, 10 miles west, delighted the Condor Express passengers with tail throws, pectoral fin slaps and a couple of breaches. Wow.

2009 04-09 Condor Express HUMPBACK WHALE MEGA DAY 2 : The morning got started with a couple of northbound Gray Whales up close to the beach. Beautiful. But the rest of the day was spent with the Humpback Whales, which continued their week-long friendly behavior. 2009 04-07 SB Channel Condor Express HUMPBACK WHALE MEGA DAY 1 : The morning trip was sunny and we had 2 Humpback Whales "mug" the boat. They circled around, and under, for about an hour. The afternoon trip was cloudy and then we had light rain. But we saw the same two Humpbacks further to the west. This time they lobbed their tails and slapped their pectoral fins and breached. What a day!

2009 03-01 Condor Express All-Day Bird Trip : We left just after dawn on an oily glassy day. The trip ran up the middle of the SB Channel, west of San Miguel Island, and out to the Rodriguez Seamount (aka Rodriguez Dome). The birders were on board to chase down the elusive Parakeet Auklets. Many other species of birds, mammals and fish were seen too. A magnificent day. We ran home south of San Miguel, through the San Miguel Passage, then back to Santa Barbara Harbor. An all day adventure.
