The first southbound Gray Whales of our viewing season were tracked along the north side of Santa Cruz Island, between Potato Harbor and Scorpion Anchorage. A nice sized pod of Risso's Dolphins were observed in Chinese Harbor as well. A thin, grey overcast sky with light winds caused a silvery metalic surface for the shortest day of the year. A couple of looks at a Bald Eagle, and a cow-calf pair of Bottlenose Dolphins near the Harbor. Wow!
A tiny Bottlenose Dolphin calf (Tursiops truncatus) plays alongside mom, just outside the entrance to Santa Barbara Harbor.
