Heermann's gulls and a few juveniles of other species rest on a drifting giant kelp (Macrocystis) paddy in the middle of the Santa Barbara Channel. Plastic debris is also seen in this photo.

Just because a brown pelican crashed to capture a fish doesn't necessarily mean it gets to keep it. Heermann's gulls flock around the pelican and try to steal it's food.
