2018 12-30 SB Channel

The first leg of our adventure was quite bumpy. Although there was no breeze, strong winds in the far west Channel blew overnight and created a lot of short interval, 4 foot swells. Strange tales: no see lions on either of the harbor entrance buoy today, but near the end of the trip there were a bunch on a large mooring can in the East Beach anchorage.
On our way out to the mid-channel, Captain Tasha slowed down so deckhand Colton could retrieve a horrible bright silver Mylar balloon. Who knows how many marine animals were saved in the process? Bravo Tasha and Colton!
Around 11:45 AM a huge area of long-beaked common dolphins was located west of platform “C”. There were at least 2,000 animals spread out over a couple of miles. All were traveling east and riding the aforementioned swells. Quite a few calves were in the mix. An interesting note: lots of western grebes were on the surface about 6 or 8 miles offshore. You could hear them calling each other as we drove by.
About 15 coastal bottlenose dolphins were also located in the East Beach anchorage on our way back to the Harbor. Two fat Pacific harbor seals were resting on the bait barge.
