EPIC COMMON DOLPHINS UNDER THE GLASSY SURFACE !
Captain Colton and his crew located 3 humpback whales and 1000 long-beaked common dolphins today and this was mostly in the fog. Fog, however, frequently brings mirror glass conditions and that’s what it did today. As we moved further south, offshore, later in the trip, there was a breeze and more sun.
Not far out of the harbor entrance a nice-sized pod of dolphins located the Condor Express and we had spectacular looks at them through the glassy surface and clear water. It was "surfin’ USA." Additional medium-sized pods would be seen all day long. We also passed a single California sea lion dining on a fish at the surface.
Thirty minutes later and about 6 miles out, our first whale came into view. It was traveling most of the time (apparently searching for balls of anchovies) but it did a nice near-surface sideways lunge and showed its ventral grooves. A while later, and quite unexpectedly, it lunged vertically, fish flying everywhere.
An hour later, and near The Lanes, we followed after a much smaller whale with more dolphins. Our third and final whale was seen shortly thereafter.
