2019 09-17 SB Channel
-
It was a private charter with 109 elementary school-age kids. They were homeschoolers from all across southern California, on a field trip.
Skies were clear and sunny. Although it started out glassy and calm, it got a tad windy and a little bit bumpy once we pushed offshore.
Sightings for the day included 2000 long-beaked common dolphins, 500 short-beaked common dolphins, and 100 offshore bottlenose dolphins. No whales were seen today.
Captain Dave drove the “Channel circle route” including a foray into the southern channel…a few miles off the coast of Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa Islands. Next, we headed west and eventually north, ending several miles off the coast of Isla Vista. The final leg included an easterly component in the general direction of the harbor but well offshore.
Highlights of the day included a large pod of short-beaked common dolphins that got airborne and were active. The pelagic bottlenose dolphins that we saw were widely dispersed over an area that stretched for nearly 5 miles. They were not particularly acrobatic although, at one point, they did play in our wake. Perhaps they were busy searching for squid and had no time for play.
