Although no whales were seen today, there were glassy seas, magnificent vistas, and oh-so-many dolphins. The air was cool and all 4 islands were extremely clear, with every rock at San Miguel visible from our mid-Channel vantage point. Totals for the trip included 2500 dolphins (of which 1500 were short-beaked), 25 Risso’s dolphins, and 6 inshore bottlenose dolphins. We also visited The Cave.
The trip across the Channel was filled with great views, but not of cetaceans. We were south of The Lanes before our first dolphin encounter. There were 4 groups of dolphins watched today. The first, and smallest pod were long-beaked. Soon thereafter the largest herd, with well over 1500 animals, was upon us. Later, two medium-sized short-beaked common dolphin pods would be found. Sandwiched in-between the common dolphins, and not too far away from Santa Cruz Island, we spent quality time with a relatively large and compact group of Risso’s dolphins.
No additional cetaceans were seen until we got back to the harbor. A group of bottlenose dolphins were watched as they moved along the breakwater.
