2020 01-03 SB Channel

After a day without running (New Year’s Day), and a rough day without whales (yesterday), we found excellent conditions in the Santa Barbara Channel today. Skies were sunny and bright. Seas were relatively calm. There was a breeze at Santa Cruz Island, but other wise none. We watched one tiny pod of long-beaked common dolphins, then, as the day progressed, three additional pods that were huge. In total, we watched over 5000 dolphins.
Captain Dave also took us on an extended tour of the northern face of the island, from just west of Chinese Harbor to Santa Cruz Channel (and beyond). We did visit The Cave, but did not go inside due to the swell. Three California sea lions (two small males and a pup) rested on the ledges on the Cave entrance walls.
